Staying Healthy and Active....even when you're busy!
It seems like every time I talking with someone lately, they have 1 million and 1 things going on during the month of May. Between graduations, kids finishing up the school year, summer vacations and work obligations, people seem busier than they have been in quite a while.
While the vast majority of these activities are fun and celebratory, it does disrupt our routine and can affect how much time we are spending on our own health and wellbeing.
Here are my 3 best tips for staying on track …even when you are busy.
#1 – Create a Plan. It is very important to make a plan that is both effective and realistic. There is no use in creating an elaborate plan that won’t fit into your busy life. Therefore, it is best to make a plan that is achievable and then make it a non-negotiable part of your schedule.
For example, I was talking with a patient who is going to be very busy this summer. We talked at length about what was a realistic plan to ensure she stays healthy and avoids her back pain from returning. For her, it is a daily 10-minute home exercise program before she goes to work, walking 15 minutes 2x per week, and doing a Core Strengthening class 1x per week.
#2 – Have a Plan B. It is great to make a plan that works most of the time but what if another factor or variable interferes? What if it rains and you can’t walk your normal route? What if you are travelling and don’t have access to your normal workout equipment? What if you no longer belong to your gym?
All of these things are factors that could derail your progress. Therefore, it is important to come up with another option. Examples could be walking in the mall or having alternative exercises that don’t involve any equipment.
#3 – Know Yourself. Are you known to start something, keep up with it for a few weeks and then it inevitably stops? How many of your new year’s resolutions do you end up completing by the end of the year? If you are a very disciplined person – my hat goes off to you. If not – know you are not alone and among the majority. If you are among the latter, it may be good to have someone help you be accountable. This could be having a buddy to do your program with or monthly wellness sessions with your PT to ensure everything is staying on track.
