Let’s Get Physical… & stay physical in the New Year!

It’s the start of 2025 which means new resolutions, a new you, and a bright outlook on the coming months. According to Forbes, about 50% of New Year’s Resolutions involve improving physical fitness. This sounds like such an awesome commitment from such a big part of the population. However, Forbes also reported that the average resolution only lasts 3.74 months.

So we did the research to provide you with the best tips to help you stick to your resolution.

First, remember your resolution doesn’t need to start on January 1st or even in January → Rushing into a resolution that you haven’t thought through or may not be truly committed to may not be the best recipe for success. You have a full year to fulfill your resolution so put the time and effort into developing a resolution that will be beneficial and motivating to you.

Next, create goals and make a plan to meet them → It is important to remember that the goals you make should be attainable, beneficial, and realistic. Making grand goals sounds nice but may lead to short falls that can be discouraging and then lead to abandonment of resolutions. By creating a multi-step goal system to progress through the year, you can take steps to your overall resolution while feeling accomplished along the way. It will also help you track your progress throughout the year.

Small steps still move you forward → In the same fashion that your goals should be attainable, so should your process. Start gradual. Going from no exercise to exercising 7 days a week or cutting an entire food group out all at once is like trying to go from never running to finishing a marathon in 1 day – not sustainable and tiring. Give your body time to adapt to the changes you are trying to make and the rest and recovery your body needs to keep yourself feeling good through the whole year.

Adapt as needed → As good as goals and plans are, remember that each one can be modified if needed. As you begin your fitness journey maybe you find an exercise class that you enjoy more than another, or you find that you can better commit to a walk in the evening vs the morning. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and adapt throughout the year to make your resolution the opportunity to do what is best for you in all of life’s situations.

Lastly, tell a friend or family member → Having a support system around you is a great way to stay motivated and accountable for the goals you set. As mentioned above, around 50% of the population makes a fitness resolution so it is highly likely that the people around you have set similar goals to you and would also benefit from the encouragement of a support system.

Don’t forget, your friends at Tandem Physical Therapy are here to help and support you through your fitness journey all year.
